Ware suffered a strained neck in a scary collision agains the San Diego Chargers last week. He was carted off the field on a stretcher. Test results came back negative and he appears to have recovered faster than initially expected.

Still with the game against the unbeaten Saints (13-0) coming a day earlier, he loses 24 hours of rest that could have been valuable. At this point, he’ll be a game-time decision for reeling Dallas (8-5).

THE SIGNPOST: Ware has played all 77 games since being drafted in 2005 and we have a hunch he’ll tough it out and go. He may not make much of a difference he makes against Drew Brees and Co., though. The Saints figure to light up the Cowboys’ defense with or without Ware in the Superdome. Game info: Saturday, 8:20 p.m. ET, NFL Network, Saints –7.

But he will play Sunday when New England travels to face the Buffalo Bills (1 p.m. ET, CBS, Patriots –7). A right shoulder injury has bothered Brady all season and this week he’s also battling through a sore rib and fingers in his throwing hand.

He was limited in practice this week, although his starting status was never in doubt. Brady and the Patriots (8-5) beat Carolina, 20-10, last week and could claim an AFC playoff berth with a win over the Bills (5-8) and favorable outcomes around the league on Sunday.

THE SIGNPOST: Not only is Brady expected to have a big game against the woeful Bills, but both his top receivers, Randy Moss and Wes Welker, should blow up for fantasy football owners. Brady (3,830 yards) is closing in on a 4,000-yard season and will look to add to his 23 touchdown passes.

Need an easy job? The cushiest gig in sports is open.

That’s because Jim Sorgi, the long-time backup quarterback to Peyton Manning, is out for the season (how that happens when you never see a down of legit NFL action is a mystery). So the Colts are looking for a veteran to serve as Manning’s No. 2.

Rookie Curtis Painter has held that role for the past four games but the Colts (12-0) figure their backup is going to play a lot down the stretch and don’t want to rely on a rookie. Jeff Garcia makes the most sense.

THE SIGNPOST: The Colts’ desire to get a backup is understandable, but it also should be worrying to Manning’s fantasy football owners. Once the Colts wrap up home field in the AFC, which they could do this week, Manning may not play a full game the rest of the regular season.

Jennings, an undrafted player out of the University of Arizona, led the Browns to a stunning 13-6 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

With the performance, Jennings figures to be the feature back the rest of the way for the Browns.

THE SIGNPOST: With the Chiefs, who allow 143.8 rushing yards per game, and the Raiders (158.7 rush YPG) on the docket for Cleveland, Jennings is a great late-season fantasy football pickup.

The Panthers’ running back is listed as questionable with a sprained ankle.

His status for Sunday’s game vs. Tampa Bay remains uncertain, however Williams has proven to be a tough and durable back the past two seasons so expect him to start. Williams, who has 1,022 rushing yards on the season, missed his third straight practice on Friday.

THE SIGNPOST: Start Williams. Even though he’s banged up and Matt Moore is starting at quarterback in place of injured Jake Delhomme, the Panthers will still feature the run. Also keep in mind that Jonathan Stewart may get more carries than usual because of Williams’ injury.

Game info: Bucs at Panthers, 1 p.m. ET (FOX); betting line: Panthers -6.5

The one-time 2,000-yard rusher’s career is over.

Lewis was placed on injured reserve by the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday, ending a 10-year career that leaves him 21st on the all-time rushing list. He’s been suffering from post-concussion symptoms and had previously annouched that he would retire after this season.

Lewis spent the first seven years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens. In Super Bowl XXXV (January 28, 2001), he became only the second rookie (the Redskins’ Timmy Smith was the other) to rush for 100 yards in the title game as the Ravens beat the Giants 34-7. Lewis had 102 yards and scored a touchdown that gave the Ravens their only championship.

Lewis finishes his career with 10,607 yards. His best year was 2003 when he made many fantasy football owners a lot of money by rushing for 2,066 yards and 14 touchdowns.

THE SIGNPOST: Lewis will be remembered for his bruising running style early in his career and his fragility at the end of it. He broke down after back-to-back 300-carry seasons and only hit double-digits in TDs in 2003.

The “fogginess” he said was behind his eyes has apparently cleared and he practiced Wednesday with the Cardinals’ first-team offense, splitting time with Matt Leinart. Warner said the “last few days have been a whole lot better” and indications are he will play on Sunday when the Cardinals (7-4) host the Minnesota Vikings (10-1) in a battle of NFC division leaders on Sunday night (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC, Vikings –3).

THE SIGNPOST: Having Warner back after his concussion is huge for everyone: fantasy football owners, fans, NBC. A Warner vs. Brett Favre matchup is more than a duel of graybears. It allows two explosive offenses to operate with their top players and that could mean major fantasy numbers for Warner, Larry Fitzgerald and Co.
