Jets Nation waited overnight to hear word of the severity of Mark Sanchez’s knee injury. The news is as good as can be expected. He has a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, suffered Thursday night in Toronto, and will require a brace.
But the rookie quarterback isn’t expected to miss any playing time, meaning Gang Green can expect him to start next Sunday against Tampa Bay.
The Sanchise put the franchise in jeopardy in the third quarter of the Jets’ 19-13 win over the Buffalo Bills. Playing on the artificial turf of Rogers Centre, Sanchez dove headfirst dangerously on an 8-yard run and banged his knee hard when he landed. He limped off two plays later and was taken to the locker room for X-rays. An MRI exam on Friday revealed the extent of the injury.
Just two days before the game, the Jets had brought in New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi to work with Sanchez on how to properly slide. Sanchez has been reckless throughout the season and was hurt during last week’s win over Carolina when he went down awkwardly while being tackled.
“Sometimes, the kid’s got to understand we’re trying to teach him to slide,” Ryan said after beating the Bills (4-8). “I love the kid, but he’s got to grow up and understand he represents our entire organization. We want what’s best for him.”
The good news is the Jets (6-6) have their first winning streak since starting the season 3-0 and are in contention for an AFC wild-card spot, although their odds are extremely slim, in part because division leaders Indianapolis and Cincinnati are on their schedule.
*The DMSTCW forecasts Mark Sanchez will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2030 after an 18-year career during which he will accumulate: 111,186 passing yards (he was born on November 11, 1986); 6 Super Bowl championships (to go along with his uniform number); $1 billion in endorsements (including several deals involving teeth-whitening products); 11,550 panties (same numbers as the zip code of the Jets’ headquarters in Hempstead, New York, which incidentally, will be renamed Sanchezstead upon his retirement); enough pats on the behind from Fireman Ed to make him feel uncomfortable; and 1 kiss from Suzy Kolber (willingly given).
