Panthers WR Steve Smith breaks his arm at football camp

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith broke his arm while attempting to make a catch at his football camp for kids on Saturday and is expected to miss the start of training camp.

It’s the same arm Smith broke in a game late last season against the Giants.

“They were messing around, the ball went over his head and he slipped,” agent Derrick Fox said Monday. “He put his arm out to brace himself. When he did he felt a sharp pain.”

Smith had surgery Sunday night to insert a small plate and screws in his left  arm.

The Panthers said there was no timeline yet on when Smith could return to action. He  will definitely miss the Panthers’ start of training camp on July 28 but is expected to be ready for the team’s first game, Sept. 12 against the Giants.

General manager Marty Hurney said Smith “feels terrible about it” and his focus is on “getting back as quickly as he can.”

The 4-time Pro Bowler caught 65 passes for 982 yards and 7 TDs last season.
