FeaturesThe Daily Mark Sanchez to Canton Watch: High hopes after practice
The reports out of Jets camp heading into Sunday’s game have to be heartening to fans of Gang Green. Apparently, something has clicked in Mark Sanchez and he’s about to unleash his potential on Sunday.
That’s according to head coach Rex Ryan, backup quarterback Kellen Clemens and guard Brandon Moore, all of whom told media this week that Sanchez looks like he’s (finally) getting it.
Here’s what each said about the rookie QB:
Ryan: “I think he’s had his best week of practice. That’s what it appears to me. … He is doing everything it takes. That’s what you love about him.”
Clemens: “He’s going to have a good game this week. He’s had a great week of practice. He’s shown more growth this week than any other week. It’s been really neat to watch him come out of what was not an easy game up in New England for anybody, let alone a rookie. He’s answered the call.”
Moore: “Not to say he hasn’t been focused before, but you could see this week in practice he’s got that quote-unquote look. He looked more focused. He looked more in control of the game plan.”
What should you take away from that? Well, if you bet on the NFL, you shouldn’t lay down against Sanchez. Teams don’t pump up slumping players like this unless there’s something true about what they’re saying.
We at the DMSTCW believe the Kid’s reached bottom and the turnaround begins against the Carolina Panthers (1 p.m. ET, FOX; betting line: Jets -3). It’s too late for the Jets to make the playoffs this year, but this season should’ve been about preparing Sanchez for the future. After a 3-0 start, though, expectations went through the roof. Now, the building for next year begins and some positive developments should occur for a New York team that’s lost six of seven games heading into this week.
*The DMSTCW forecasts Mark Sanchez will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2030 after an 18-year career during which he will accumulate: 111,186 passing yards (he was born on November 11, 1986); 6 Super Bowl championships (to go along with his uniform number); $1 billion in endorsements (including several deals involving teeth-whitening products); 11,550 panties (same numbers as the zip code of the Jets’ headquarters in Hempstead, New York, which incidentally, will be renamed Sanchezstead upon his retirement); enough pats on the behind from Fireman Ed to make him feel uncomfortable; and 1 kiss from Suzy Kolber (willingly given).
