Jamal Lewis

The one-time 2,000-yard rusher’s career is over.

jamal-lewis-brownsLewis was placed on injured reserve by the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday, ending a 10-year career that leaves him 21st on the all-time rushing list. He’s been suffering from post-concussion symptoms and had previously annouched that he would retire after this season.

Lewis spent the first seven years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens. In Super Bowl XXXV (January 28, 2001), he became only the second rookie (the Redskins’ Timmy Smith was the other) to rush for 100 yards in the title game as the Ravens beat the Giants 34-7. Lewis had 102 yards and scored a touchdown that gave the Ravens their only championship.

Lewis finishes his career with 10,607 yards. His best year was 2003 when he made many fantasy football owners a lot of money by rushing for 2,066 yards and 14 touchdowns.

THE SIGNPOST: Lewis will be remembered for his bruising running style early in his career and his fragility at the end of it. He broke down after back-to-back 300-carry seasons and only hit double-digits in TDs in 2003.
